NATIONAL HISPANIC LEADERSHIP AGENDA APPLAUDS U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS FOR SPEAKING OUT AGAINST ARIZONA’S SB 1070

Mayors’ Conference calls for repeal of SB 1070 and passage of immigration reform

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of the nation’s 30 leading Hispanic organizations issued the statement below applauding the U.S. Conference of Mayors for passing two resolutions at its 78th Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City today expressing opposition to Arizona’s SB 1070 law and copy cat legislation in other states, as well as expressing support for legal challenges to the law and calling for swift action at the federal level to enact comprehensive immigration reform.

“The U.S. Conference of Mayors sent a clear message today that laws like Arizona’s SB 1070 are not the way to address our broken immigration system. The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda and its member organizations have spoken out, and continue to speak everyday, about how SB 1070 is morally wrong and an affront to the civil rights of Latinos, immigrants, and all Americans. Today, the men and women in charge of running our nation’s cities made the practical argument for why SB 1070 is unworkable and wrong. If implemented, the law will be a drain on scarce city resources, deter immigrant and minority communities from cooperating with police, and open up cities and individual police officers to costly lawsuits. At time when city budgets are still struggling to cope with the impact of a severe recession, our mayors are sending a clear signal that SB 1070 creates more problems and solves nothing.

“NHLA is proud that mayors from across the nation are standing up for repeal of SB 1070 and passage of comprehensive immigration reform that will unite families, provide an orderly path to legal residency and citizenship, and better position the federal government to secure our borders in a humane and effective manner.”
