NHLA SUPPORTS DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE’S LEGAL CHALLENGE OF ARIZONA’S DISCRIMINATORY LEGISLATION

The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda welcomes the announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice that it is intervening to block the implementation of Arizona’s racial-profiling law, known as SB 1070. The controversial and divisive piece of legislation has taken center stage over the last few months, calling into question constitutional protections, federal civil rights laws and the role of the federal government to enforce immigration laws.

NHLA ENCOURAGED BY PRESIDENT’S CALL TO ACTION ON IMMIGRATION REFORM

The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) welcomed the speech today by President Obama, and supports his call on Congress to provide real legislative solutions to this important issue for all Americans. NHLA continues to put forward a clear framework for immigration reform, which focuses on the needs of everyone in the U.S., families, businesses, state and local governments and law enforcement, and acknowledges the visceral problems with our broken immigration system that need critical solutions.

NATIONAL HISPANIC LEADERSHIP AGENDA APPLAUDS U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS FOR SPEAKING OUT AGAINST ARIZONA’S SB 1070

The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of the nation’s 30 leading Hispanic organizations issued the statement below applauding the U.S. Conference of Mayors for passing two resolutions at its 78th Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City today expressing opposition to Arizona’s SB 1070 law and copy cat legislation in other states, as well as expressing support for legal challenges to the law and calling for swift action at the federal level to enact comprehensive immigration reform.

The SB1070 bill opens the doors to racial profiling. It requires police officers, if they form a 'reasonable suspicion' that someone is an illegal immigrant, to determine the person's immigration status.

With your help, we can make sure this doesn't go any further and remind President Obama, Congressional leaders and the people of Arizona that this is not the way it is done in America. We need your help to stop this unconstitutional law!

We ask organizations, civic, religious, labor and individuals to refrain from using Arizona as a convention site and vowing not to spend your vacation dollars in that state until SB1070 law is overturned or ruled unconstitutional.
